FAQ
It says FAQ, but this is the general "things you should probably know" post. If you have questions, comment with them here. Anon is on and IP is off, if you have a question you're not comfortable attaching your name to.
Let's start with the most important:
The Mods will occasionally reach into your e-mail box and say Hello!
Be prepared to have mods contact you at random to throw Hand of Mod happenstances at you. Just as there are things you can't control in real life, there are things your PCs can't control in their own lives.
You have the right to refuse things that make you uncomfortable, of course, because this is meant to add an element of unpredictability that makes the game fun, not stressful.
We will not do anything along the lines of pregnancy, mutilation, rape, or death. Examples of the things we might do are, "Everyone who had the tuna at the college cafeteria yesterday gets food poisoning," or "Your character's car broke down this morning." Think lamps turning into pine cones, not horrible life-altering terrible.
It also serves as a way for us to ensure ICA=ICC. You might get Hand of Mod coming down to serve your consequences, but we'll never go out of our way to destroy your character mentally or physically, or to "trigger" anything in your character. Zen just don't play that way.
Gosh this game has a lot of specific terms.
Here, let me list them out for you.
Mods - the OOC mods who are in charge of this entire RP
GMs - the NPCs who run the MMO, Legacy of Zenderael
PCs - Player characters, the characters who exist in the game world outside of the MMO
Alts - MMO characters played by PCs
OOG - Out Of Game, refers to the "real world" game where PCs exist
IG - In Game, refers to the world inside the MMO
OOC - Out of Character, outside the RP entirely, refers to you, the player
Can I app a GM?
No. They're mod-run NPCs.
What server are we playing on?/Can we have alts on different servers?
This game takes place on the Everea server. There are other servers, and your PCs can have characters on them, but for the purposes of this game, only alts on the Everea server will count.
Alts can be transferred between servers (it costs real money for PCs to do this), so you can bring in higher-level alts later on by saying they were transferred from another server.
So I'm confused by this guilds terminology...
Alright, so most MMOs have player-run guilds, that players join and they facilitate being able to play with a select group of people. Zenderael has those too. They're called leagues.
Job guilds are not those kinds of guilds. They're strictly a set-piece and used to facilitate class separations. You are not obligated to know people who are in your same job guild. Theoretically your characters are part of the same organization, but every nurse in a nurse's union doesn't know every other nurse in the union. It's like that. Think of it more like a real-world union than an in-game guild.
What are the character limits?
Two PCs with five alts between them.
Are there any age limits on characters?
PCs are strictly 14 through 45, nobody older, nobody younger.
Alts have no strict age limit, though mods reserve the right to judge extremes on a case-by-case basis.
What's the stance on PBs?
PC Played-Bys are real life PBs. Alt PBs are animated (comic, cartoon, cgi as long as it looks obviously fake). You're also free to use screencaps from the MMO of your choice as your alt PB, but humans only.
What are the activity rules?
AC rules has a separate post, here.
What happens if I drop a character?
If it's an alt, you lose that alt. You can say your PC deleted them or they got locked by the GMs or whatever you need to say to get them out of commission. If it's a PC, you lose that PC and all the alts they played.
What about death?
You are allowed to kill your characters, but keep in mind that without a PC, you have no alts to play, and each new PC means a new set of alts. Be very careful about killing your PCs. PC death is permanent, and you lose all alts attached to that PC.
Alt death, on the other hand, is pretty cheap. You can come up with a million reasons to resurrect them if you want, or you can use storyline death as an excuse to delete an alt, or whatever. You can play fast and loose with alt death because that's just the sort of thing that happens in freeform RP.
What is the game's timeline?
Two weeks IRL = one week IC. We will post updates every two weeks to summarize the events of the past IC week and outline any events that may occur in the following week.
There's also the timeline post, which is a list of all game interactions in chronological order. Please keep careful track of when your logs happen! Post them with a date, or at the very least, a "before [X post]" or "after [X post]".
What is the MMO like?
Think of it as a cross between WoW and any other MMO you've ever played. It's a traditional hack and slash type game, in a generic fantasy setting. Its lore is discussed in more detail here.
You are free to make up details about the setting and gameplay. Anything that isn't specifically mentioned in the info is fair game. Name your own dungeons, monsters, gear, bosses, etc. We'll add them to the game post! Basically, players will build the world as the game goes.
What about the city(ies) where the PCs live?
Also has its own post, here.
Can I run my own plots?
Certainly! We love player plots! They're what keeps a game going.
If they'll affect other characters, we'd appreciate being contacted about it first, but that's only to make sure mods are on the same page as you. If it's just personal-interactions drama, don't worry about it. If it's something like a city-wide power outtage, ask us first!
Can you filter to specific characters on the messageboard?
Ennnh, not really. You can PM, send a private message to one PC in particular, but you can't include a group, like, say, filter to everyone in your RP league. What you can do is post an e-mail addressed to whoever you'd like to "filter" to.
Example of a PM.
Example of an e-mail post.
Otherwise, posts will be public and anybody on the MB can see and respond to them.
It's 2050! Can we have flying cars?
No. But feel free to have your characters whine about how they're living in the future and they STILL don't have flying cars yet!
