It can be either, honestly. Most people would RP in real-time on their character in Zen, but they could also do it over AIM, on a board, etc. Again, it depends on how the PCs want to handle it.

The OOC presentation of it (whether you post a finished colour-coded log or do a comment-thread log) doesn't mean anything with regard to whether it happened in Zen or elsewhere.
