Pakerion's Fate
Guys, let’s discuss the fate of Pakerion.
After Aerveas' death, Pakerion is without a king. This will leave us with a couple rather unimpressive changes:
1) The people and Pakerion no longer pay that 5% of income tax. This wasn't relevant to most gameplay situations or characters, but it does mean the Earthers in Pakerion have had a huge weight lifted off of them, and that the grunts Aerveas hired to collect are no longer employed and harassing people about payment.
2) Aerveas' other main contribution to Pakerion was using those taxes to build his army and keep Everea and Safta from prosecuting criminals that fled to Pakerion borders. This is no longer in effect. Escaping into Pakerion does not guarantee a criminal will not be pursued by Everean or Saftan authorities, and the borders are becoming safer. No one can murder or steal, then taunt safely over on the Pakerion side.
Aerveas wasn't exactly running a stable operation, and the only thing that falls apart without him is his own palace. Loot all the things! Spoilers: the rogues already looted all the things.
The former capital of Enghelab has merged with Las Vegas. The city government has taken over, but nobody seems to mind. Left alone, the rest of Pakerion will likely default into dividing itself by guild territory and other small fiefdoms owned by the nobility who still have enough wealth left to fight about it. What the rules and standards are depend on whose turf you're on, and how willing/able they are to enforce their influence.
There are also a number of now-unemployed mercenaries, who used to be working for Aerveas, in the countryside. They’re making a mess of things. Some are working for various local nobles or even being hired by the Las Vegas government, but quite a few have turned to open banditry. This is generally much worse in the countryside than it is in cities, where hired guards will try to take care of the problem.
Chaos for everyone! In other words: business as usual. This is Pakerion. They don’t even want the land so much as they want the excuse to fight about something.
Assassins and rogues have a vested interest in keeping it largely an anarchy, but we have several playable guild leaders whose actions and responses could have an impact on Pakerion. We would like to hear what they would do (or what you would like them to do!), and would like other guild leaders to chime in on what their reactions to that would be to build a clear idea of possible chains of events and IC consequences.
We are also interested in what people OOCly want from Pakerion, for better or for worse, so even if it's left alone by characters IC, we can still strive for Cool Things in the background.
