Phase I Summary
Early Mysteries
In 2050, a number of players of the massively popular MMORPG Legacy of Zenderael lived in Fall City, a large city in Oregon roughly analogous to Portland. They all roleplayed with one another on the MMORPG’s Everea server, plus some attended school, worked, and lived together. They noticed something strange when members of their league, Righteous Dawn, stopped responding to in-game whispers but still participated in game content and ended up dead. They discovered that this was not occurring on other servers, prompting more investigation into what happened.
The game’s developers, a company named X-DAV, remained tight lipped about what happened. They drew further criticism when the wife of a state-congressman that criticized them turned up dead. The Fall City crew also grew uncomfortable when they realized some of their private roleplaying material and storylines was being used for tie-in novels. Furthermore, more characters ended up nonresponsive to whispers or dead in-game, and then mysterious NPCs started appearing who would have full voice acting over speakers with no accompanying text. In-game, mysterious NPCs wearing grey cloaks began to appear and follow certain characters around.
It eventually became clear that the impossible was occurring: Zenderael and the Earth were merging. One woman noticed a tree species unique to Zenderael growing in her yard. Other people began encountering monsters. This culminated in the disappearance of a friend who played the game, Rachel Hamada. Then, the leader of the berserkers’ guild was found during an X-DAV sponsored meet-up [ali's meet-up, not an x-dav sponsored one--there was a berserker security guard at the x-dav sponsored one tho]. One of the Fall City players, Rhys Elena, ate the corpse’s stomach and became the new Ahura--leader of the berserkers.
Rachel was later found on Zenderael, where their characters located her. When she spoke, they heard it over their speakers. Individuals from Earth began appearing in Zenderael and vice-versa. This prompted Victoria Hutchins, daughter of the anti-X-DAV congressman, to challenge the company. She was later murdered by Greycloaks, who could appear on Earth too, as were others that asked too many questions. At the same time, characters on Zenderael began gaining self-awareness -- and then others began appearing on Earth, much to the surprise of their players.
Apocalypse Now
The merges picked up in speed. Large parts of the Zenderean city of Bastan began to appear in Fall City, leading to parts of it being called Bastantown. This came to a head with the arrival of a raid boss, the undead dragon Kharveryos, which had to be slain by Rhys Elena and the new leader of the paladins, Ezra Amos. Afterward, they were sent to Zenderael by X-DAV. The merges began affecting other parts of the world, as landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower disappeared. More of the guild leaders came to Earth, too -- or their corpses -- and had the organs of the creator god, Xumurdad, eaten by the Fall City residents. This included the new leader of the hunters, Jordan Hayes, and the new leader of the alchemists, Harriet Webster.
Fall City was placed under military quarantine as the degree of the merges became apparent. X-DAV mobilized to try to help the Zendereans on Earth. People were provided employment with X-DAV and helped hunt monsters that appeared there. In addition, it became easier to communicate between worlds because of dragonmail: fairy dragons that carried letters back and forth, which proved able to warp between worlds. The same proved true of mages. However, most people were stuck, whether Earth natives stranded on Zenderael or vice-versa.
The government finally intervened when the merges began to become catastrophic in April. New York, Washington, D.C., and Paris disappeared entirely into Zenderael, merging with cities there. The government seized both X-DAV’s servers and personnel. The servers being shut off resulted in every formerly played Zenderean achieving self-awareness. X-DAV’s developers were murdered by Greycloaks before they could explain the exact circumstances. Most of Bastan came to Fall City, depositing the queen of the Zenderean nation of Everea there.
Aerveas’s War
On Zenderael, royalty began taking advantage of these changes. Aerveas, the king of the wild and brutal nation of Pakerion, chose to invade Everea. He fashioned an alliance with the leader of the rogues, the Vairya, to this point. He conquered Bastan’s remains. Rachel Hamada was killed as a result of the battle. He managed to capture Ezra, prompting a rescue by the berserkers and others. A loose alliance between the berserkers and the hunters fought against Aerveas, while Ezra led his remaining paladins to the neutral nation of Safta. He formed an alliance with the leader of the spellswords, the Mazda, who was dealing with Paris merging with the Saftan capital. After the initial battle, Aerveas became the leader of the druids, the Vohu.
On Earth, the leader of the mages, the Asha, arrived. Driven half-mad, he chose to surrender his god-organ to Gabriel Chen, with the help of his sentient golem, Reilanin. As the new Asha, Gabe returned to Zenderael. They began to realize that the Greycloaks had been murdering other guild leaders. The Greycloaks attempted to murder the Mazda, too, but failed; the Mazda realized, with the help of other leaders, that giving the god-organ to an Earth native made the merges non-catastrophic. She turned her powers (and eyes) over to an Earth woman who joined the spellswords, Lera Savinkov.
Aerveas managed to cripple the hunters and berserkers by driving the hunters from their base, with the assistance of the god of war, Mezzron. Then, he used his powers as the Vohu to petrify the berserker city, the Undertow. The berserkers and hunters allied with the assassins at the suggestion of their leader, the Armaiti. Aerveas began consolidating power and preparing to invade Safta, but news of his plans reached the new Mazda and the paladin leader. The leaders of the paladins, berserkers, hunters, mages, and spellswords met and agreed to an alliance against Aerveas, launching a two-pronged invasion. They managed to defeat Aerveas’s forces in Pakerion and both armies converged on Bastan.
Unfortunately, formerly fictional villains were now quite real. The leader of the hunters, Jordan Hayes, encountered her former alt, Alexander Varista, and both ultimately died as a result of the confrontation. The remaining guild leaders, reinforced by the arrival of the alchemist leader, Harriet, managed to retake Bastan from Aerveas. Aerveas perished to Rhys Elena and Ezra Amos, while Gabriel Chen and Lera Savinkov, with assistance from a construct built by Harriet of the alchemists, defeated the god of war, Mezzron.
Former alts continued to prove problematic after the end of the war. Fall City had been shut down, first by a lamia that entranced a number of people, and then a necroticorn spreading numerous illnesses. Nova, a former character of Harriet’s, arrived in Fall City and murdered the sister of a young graduate student named Duncan Jackson--the player of Nova's best friend, Artemis. This led to Duncan killing Nova in return. He ultimately came into contact with the cleric leader, the Vahishta, through the help of a young mage named Irena Rose. Duncan then murdered the Vahishta and consumed his god-organ so that he could resurrect his sister.
As the new Vahishta, he then set to work on fixing the necroticorn's epidemic. On Zenderael, the Vairya tried to forge an alliance with forces formerly loyal with Aerveas. Their commander, Acher Ostendramm, executed her for her abandonment of Aerveas, and gave the tongue to one of her Earth-born rogues. The two new Earth guild leaders led to Zenderael appearing as a continent in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The merge between the worlds was complete.
